Nick Griffin, leader of the British National Party (BNP)

Leader of the UK’s far-right political party, the British National Party (BNP), has been declared bankrupt.

Appearing at Welshpool County Court in Wales on Thursday, Nick Griffin was declared insolvent.

This came after Griffin was found to have been left with debts following a dispute with Gilbert Davies & Partners legal firm that represented the nationalist politician on previous cases.

However, the BNP leader said that despite bankruptcy, he will still continue to serve as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the North West region of England and will seek re-election in May.

“Being bankrupt does NOT prevent me being or standing as an MEP. It does free me from financial worries,” Griffin tweeted on Friday.

According to a statement on the BNP website, the party leader had offered to repay 42p in the pound over a five-year period, but it was rejected by the petitioning creditor.

Griffin is also expected to be discharged from bankruptcy in one year from now under the Insolvency Act 1986.
